In the sealed bag, a potting soil will last one year, while in an open bag, it will last six months. This is dependent on how and where it is kept. You should store it in an airtight container in a cool, dry location, such as a basement. Because there is a discount on potting soil, I sometimes buy more than I need. However, I discovered that the potting soil can only be kept in its finest condition for a certain amount of time. Keep reading.

Opened Bag

If all conditions are ideal, an opened bag of potting soil will last 6 months. I recommend utilizing the potting soil as soon as possible after opening the bag. This assures that it will provide the best moisture, texture, and nutrients for your container plants. If you have any leftover, a potting soil can be put it in the same bag if it’s resealable and thick enough not to rip while being stored. I would reseal the bag and keep it in an airtight container until you are ready to use it again. This procedure will extend the life of the potting soil by 6 months.

Closed Bag

If all other conditions are perfect, an unopened bag of potting soil will last you a year. If you have a bag of potting soil that hasn’t been opened, it’s best to keep it sealed. Keep it in an airtight container and store it somewhere cool and dry until you’re ready to use it again. After you’ve sealed and stored this potting soil, it should last for around a year.

Tips To Make A Potting Soil In Bag Last Longer

Depending on how you maintain the soil, there are ways to extend the life of a potting soil!

Maintain The Organic Materials

All you have to do now is maintain adding ingredients that will degrade in the stored potting soil. Organic substances are the most likely to decay quickly. Peat moss, organic matter, and organic fertilizer are examples of such materials. To keep the potting soil fresh, I recommend adding a bit of these thing every 2-3 months. Peat moss, organic compost, and organic fertilizer can all be used.

A Potting Soil Texture

As elements like peat moss disintegrate, the texture of the potting soil will worsen. The potting soil’s substance will grow finer. Moisture and air will not be able to circulate freely through the potting soil due to its texture. The best thing to do is to add a little perlite and organic compost to the potting soil every 2-3 months.

A Potting Soil Nutrients

A slow-release fertilizer may or may not be included in the potting soil you purchased. Before storing potting soil, make sure it’s completely dry. Otherwise, the moisture will activate the slow-release fertilizer, making it unavailable when you use the potting soil later. When kept in storage, I also recommend adding some slow-release fertilizer and compost to the potting soil every 2-3 months.
