21 Of The Best Houseplants You Can Give As Gift: The Best Ultimate Plants Of 2021

YouTube video

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could give a gift that represented so much more than just material things? Did they receive a gift that brought them peace and happiness? And at the same time, wishing them plenty of luck in their future endeavors?

Consider giving plants as a gift!

What makes plants the perfect gift is that you will always be remembered every time the recipient sees his or her plant. Doesn’t it feel good to know someone is thinking of you all the time?

My gift would be pretty awesome if it could help someone like that!

Had I known how much pleasure and happiness it brings to give plants as gifts, I would have done it much sooner. I only struggle with deciding which plants to give and to whom. There’s no cause for concern, and resolving it is easy.

Why Plants Make the Best Gift?

Is it true that you do not know everything there is to know about plants?

No matter what your beliefs about plants are, they make the world a better place. It’s no secret that plants tend to make us take a little more notice of life as we go about our daily lives.

The development of a green thumb is much easier with indoor plants than outdoor plants. The first time you have planted a plant and it makes it through the one-month mark is not so bad after all. Then, gradually building up your plant collection will be easy. You will be glad you did!

I personally think plants are better gifts than bouquets of flowers. I would agree that flowers are a prettier and easier gift to give, although hold a dozen roses in one hand versus trying to hold a pot with one hand, let alone taking a cute selfie while you do so without dropping it, it’s just easier.

The real question is, would you rather see a flower slowly die on your living room table or would you rather see a plant thrive every day? A flower tends to die out much more quickly than a plant. If plants are neglected, they can take weeks or even months before they die, but flowers begin to wilt after only two weeks.

One of the reasons that plants are better than flowers (in my opinion) is that plants have the ability to impart a great deal of useful life lessons.

  • In order for your plant to thrive, you will need to put the time and effort into it.
  • By paying attention to what your plant needs, you can become more aware of how other people feel.
  • For progress to happen, you do not need to overdeliver. All it needs is what it needs, and you’ll be amazed.
  • Regardless of how neglected a plant may be, it will forgive you (depending on the type of plant) the moment you decide to fix the issue (ex. forgetting to water).
  • In the end, I believe that plants can teach us a valuable lesson about life because just because it is so simple, it doesn’t mean we should overcomplicate it. Plants need sunlight to grow, so you can move them to get more light and they will thrive. It won’t take long for these little differences to have a big impact on the health of your plant.

If you take good care of your plants, they will last for a long time. You won’t have to worry as most plants won’t require much attention. Putting the plant in a spot that receives enough sunlight and watering the soil when the soil is dry are the most important steps.

In addition, you’ll enjoy watching your plants grow as they go along. It was the same feeling I got when I passed my board exams when my orchid plant started blooming! To feel that way, it took me only a few months and I did it with less effort with my orchid.

Besides being very therapeutic, plants have an interesting and unique aspect as well. In addition to teaching us more about ourselves, they can help us realize other ways we can better our lives. Give someone a plant for their birthday, during a holiday, or simply because it’s your favorite.

What’s The Best Plant To Gift?

Orchids (Orchidaceae )

Orchids are simple and elegant enough to make you want to give them to someone you know who is laid back and has a classy yet relaxed sense of style. One of the qualities you may find among your best friends or family members.

It’s also important to note that orchids bloom for longer periods than most plants (up to several weeks), so it’s a great gift not only to show off your gifts to the recipient, but will also serve as a reminder of your generosity every time they admire your plants. What do we want more than that?

Even after blooming is over, the plant will continue to grow and show beauty indoors. Life will still continue even after we fall. It’s a much-needed reminder.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Orchids are quite simple to care for. All you need to do is place them in an area with enough light and good air circulation. After the top inch of soil has dried out, you will only need to water them.

Succulents

It is easy to kill these plants and low maintenance properties make succulents a great gift for a young gardener or someone who has an endless schedule. In addition, they are an excellent first plant for kids just learning the basics of gardening.

Succulents come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and styles to suit any preference or need. From hanging baskets to ones that grow like bunny ears to those that grow spikes, there are succulents that will grow in any condition! Adding to the list of reasons why succulents are incredible plants.

Succulents, especially Echeveria succulents, are my all-time favorite plant, because you can plant them in so many different cute planters! Buying succulents for my planters is what I do most of the time. There’s no way they could be empty!

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Succulent plants are designed to withstand extreme conditions with minimal water. As a result, you should water moderately and avoid overwatering.

The succulent’s ability to store water in their tissue will benefit from allowing the soil to dry out between watering. In turn, this slows down their loss of water. Even though they thrive in areas with plenty of bright light, they will also thrive in shaded areas.

Rattlesnake Plant (Calathea Lancifolia)

You can gift the Rattlesnake plant to someone special if you are looking for something different and unique. The name of this group may be intimidating, but their looks and charm more than compensate for that.

If used as a centerpiece, it can be hard to ignore the wavy leaf patterns and beautiful watercolor markings. There is no way you will be disappointed with the way a Rattlesnake can complement your outdoor space.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Place your rattlesnake plant in a spot with good lighting, but away from direct sunlight. It thrives in a room at least 60oF (15oC) and you should water it regularly to maintain the soil’s moisture level.

Amaryllis Flower (Hippeastrum)

Amaryllis plants are quite popular during the Christmas season and the holiday is closely tied to them. This plant makes a wonderful gift for the winter holidays if you want to brighten up someone’s Christmas spirit and warm their home with its striking beauty.

There is perhaps nothing more astounding about amaryllis than the fact that their blooms can last anywhere from 7 to 10 weeks long, giving gardeners plenty of time to appreciate their beauty before they retreat into dormancy again for the year. In addition, this plant is available in different shades, including pink, orange, salmon, and red.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Amaryllis care is simple and everyone can do it. It only needs a place with sufficient lighting and moist soil, which can be maintained through watering. If you wish, you can apply home garden fertilizer after some time to nourish the plant.

Lucky Bamboo (Dracaena Sanderiana)

In no way, shape, or form, is this plant similar to bamboo. The Chinese culture considers this plant to be a symbol of strength. Also, it’s highly regarded for bringing good fortune to its owner.

A good luck gift or greeting is a great way to wish someone the best of luck in their endeavors. What if I told you that the number of stalks on this plant represented a different meaning? Here are a few that are quite handy when giving as gifts:

  • A lucky bamboo gift of two stalks will express love and luck
  • The three stalks symbolize wealth, long life, and happiness
  • The five stalks of good health include the following: spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, and intuitive.
  • A great deal of wealth can be achieved through the benefit and prosperity of the six stalks.
  • Alternatively, if you just want to send healthy wishes, consider seven stalks
  • It expresses growth or improves fertility through its eight stalks
  • Then send nine stalks to someone to wish them good fortune
  • In addition, ten stalks are meant as a good luck wish to help someone achieve their life goals.
  • For someone to bestow powerful blessings in general, especially enduring health and great wealth, then send them 21 stalks.

Last but not least, never give someone 4 stalks. There is a strong possibility of attracting negative energy when one wishes for bad luck. The number four represents death in the Chinese language. Thus, giving a plant like this as a gift is very rude and viewed as an epithet of death. Pick a combination that is positive and sends good wishes except for the four stalks.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Lucky bamboo plants do phenomenally well in organic soil with a lot of organic matter present. Maintain constant moisture in the soil. At least once a month, feed the plants. This plant should be located in an area that has indirect light of moderate intensity.

Lavender Plant (Lavandula)

I mean, this plant is pretty cool, isn’t it? In case you’re ever unsure which plants to gift, lavender is an easy-to-love plant that makes a great gift.

It is popular for its attractive and beautiful flowers, its medicinal characteristics, and its lovely fragrance. Consider a smaller variety of the plant.

It makes a beautiful bush and is an excellent choice for tabletops as it develops into a magnificent bush.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Lavender does well in a spot with at least eight hours of full sunlight a day. The soil should be allowed to dry out first before watering, so be careful to water sparingly. The heat or warmth of this plant is essential; therefore, keep it away from cold temperatures during winter.

Cyclamen Plant (Cyclamen Persicum)

One of the most beautiful and exotic-looking plants to give someone is Cyclamen. It has an eye-catching colored bloom as well as an exquisite and charming heart-shaped pattern on the leaves that are quite adorable for a wonderful gift. Cyclamens look beautiful in exquisite pots, or you can choose a simple pot and let the color of the plant speak for itself.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: To promote their beautiful blooms and nicely patterned leaves, Cyclamen require special attention. It should be placed in an area with plenty of bright light but away from direct sunlight.

As well, you have to make sure its environment won’t be too cold (below 40oF or 4oC) nor too hot (above 68oF or 20oC). Remember that it has a sensitivity to being over-watered and under-watered, so make sure to keep it adequately moist by watering it enough.

Christmas Cactus (Schlumbergera truncata)

As Poinsettia, Christmas tree, and Cyclamen are some of the best holiday gifts to give, Schlumbergera (Christmas cactus) makes an excellent holiday gift option for friends and gardeners.

They are a charming sight to see, no matter where they are planted, especially when they are in bloom. Moreover, these plants are extremely easy to take care of and will look amazing on a corner, a tabletop, or even a window sill. Schlumbergera are available in various flower forms and colors that I really enjoy. I appreciate how well it melds with my other indoor decorations, so I find it very convenient when decorating my home.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Schlumbergera is adaptive to low light but does extremely well in bright light. Make sure the soil is organically rich and well drained. Considering it isn’t a true cactus, it has a relatively low tolerance to drought but appreciates good water storage because it is a succulent. Therefore, depending on the surrounding conditions, water sparingly. During the summer, keep the soil moist, but during autumn and winter, water your plants just enough to prevent them from drying out.

Poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima)

Christmas is typically associated with poinsettias, thus making them a lovely gift to give to someone during that season. Red leaves at the top with yellow flowers in the center and green foliage at the bottom make for a striking plant that anyone can appreciate and admire no matter how far they are away.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s only a gift for Christmas, since Poinsettias are timeless and a wonderful gift throughout the year. It is also a great way to compliment someone on their beauty or personality. Every Christmas, my mom loves receiving Poinsettia plants. This plant, according to her, makes her home feel like it’s Christmas time.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Poinsettias are mostly the hardy type of plants, which means they are super forgiving if you happen to neglect it. It is important to make sure that your Poinsettia plants receive adequate sunlight and oxygen when choosing a location. Furthermore, it is important to note that these plants can be affected by fungal growth in humid environments, so make sure they receive good air circulation and avoid overwatering.

Florist Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe blossfeldiana)

Whether for a birthday, anniversary, or any other occasion, a florist kalanchoe is a thoughtful gift. No matter who you want to gift it to — your boss, colleagues, friends, or family — you will not be disappointed. You can give it as a gift if you want your home or workplace to have a fun, colorful vibe.

Florist Kalanchoe is one of the most unique plants out there because it is a succulent. Secondly, it starts out as a small bushy plant that eventually develops into beautiful blooming colorful flowers that last for a while. This plant was once a gift I gave to my boss and it has remained in her office ever since.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: To maintain the vibrancy of Kalanchoe, ensure you place it in a spot with sufficient bright lights. Ideally, the temperature should be between 55°F and 84°F (13°C and 29°C) and the planting medium should be well-drained, nutrient-rich, and moist. Succulent plants store water in their tissues and do poorly in wet soils since their tissues hold moisture. The topsoil should be watered only when it is dry.

Shield Ferns (Dryopteris Carthusiana)

If you know someone who loves things to be simple but elegant, give Shield ferns as a gift. While they have vibrant, rippled foliage, their growth pattern is visually pleasing and will liven up any area when used as decor.

Due to its non-toxic nature, it is the ideal choice for dog and cat owners.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Shield ferns are a lasting gift if kept under favorable conditions. As a result, it should receive indirect sunlight and be watered regularly. If not watered properly, this plant is quite unforgiving. Keep an eye on the soil regularly. If it feels dry on top, ensure that you water it enough.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

Plants like the Peace Lily have a lot more to offer than meets the eye. They’re elegant and simple at the same time. Their meaning is one of hope, peace, and rebirth. Dark green foliage and white flowers peeking out from the plant create a look that many people have likened to a truce flag.

It is a common gift to express sympathy with Peace Lilies. A great gift to give to someone who passed away would be one of these. It shows your support and sympathy at the same time. Peace Lily plants may remind them that you are thinking of them during times of need by helping them appreciate you more.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: When Care Lily is placed in an area with bright lighting, she loves it, but does not like being directly in the sun. Despite the fact that it can survive in a shady environment, it will grow faster if there is plenty of light. If the first inch of soil becomes dry, you will only need to water the plant. It’s good for them to live in moist soil, but do not confuse this with standing water.

Ensure it is always covered in a couple of inches of water, as bamboo does exceptionally well with sufficient water. Also, use less soil for these plants because they do well in just water, and you might harm them if you use too much soil or fertilizer. Be careful not to overfertilize the plant. Last but not least, place it in an area with good lighting.

Calathea Medallion (Calathea Roseopicta)

Although the name might seem aggressive, the reason is that the foliage has a tri-pattern. Reptiles have skin similar to ours. The appearance of this plant is quite appealing. In terms of behavior, however, it is quite fascinating and very different from the norms.

During the night, the leaves will close and will be opened again in the morning when the light is there. It is possible to hear their leaves rustling if you are close enough. It’s no wonder these plants are sometimes referred to as “Prayer Plants”.

One of my friends gifted me this plant when she was going through a breakup, and she said it helped her cope with the aftermath so well. She learned to look at the brighter side of life thanks to this plant. You will find success again when you are ready despite the downfalls you have experienced. By closing at night and opening again in the morning, the plant symbolizes how mornings are a new start, so make the most of them.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Calathea Medallion is one of those super easy to care for and maintain type of plant. This makes them an excellent choice for adding some greenery to your home decor, especially in bright to moderate light.

As an added bonus, you only need to water it at least once a week, which makes it a perfectly suited gift if you tend to be away from home for most of the time. Another good reason for giving this plant to cat and dog owners is that it’s non-toxic.

Bird’s Nest Fern (Asplenium Nidus)

Bird’s Nest Ferns have a similar appearance to Shield Fern plants with their unique style. The large, wavy, and glossy leaves of this plant grow from the center while spreading in all directions, giving your living space a graceful feel.

As a result, it’s a wonderful plant to gift to someone who has a lot of available space to accommodate the plant once it’s fully grown up.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Place this plant in a place with bright light and sufficient moisture. It is important to provide your plants with nutrient-rich soil that is moist at all times. For this reason, you should water your Bird’s Nest Fern as soon as the soil surface dries up. Last but not least, you should not water this plant at the center as it holds water and encourages root rot.

Chinese Money Plant (Pilea Peperomiodes)

In addition to its popular name, Pilea Peperomiodes has a spectacular structure that is quite intriguing. The plant’s long stalks and coin-shaped leaves, which originate from China, create a unique structure that makes it distinctive.

Aside from aesthetics, it is also a great gift if you wish someone good luck and fortune in whatever they are doing or intend to do. My favorite way to give this plant to someone who is starting a new career is to gift it to them. In the same way that their plant grows, it gives them hope and confidence that their career will flourish.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Pilea Peperomiodes belongs to the succulent group, therefore, shade it from direct sunlight. However, this plant requires a little more effort than the others because it brings a lot of luck. At least three times a week, you should rotate your plant so that each part receives enough light.

In addition to ensuring that your plant grows evenly, rotating it will prevent one stalk from growing longer than the other, which is the plant’s way of communicating to you that it needs more light. Make sure the soil is fully dry before watering by performing the knuckle test. Also, if the leaves appear a little droopy, that’s an indication of dry soil.

Air Plants

As Tillandsia, this plant draws most of its nourishment from the atmosphere, making it an exceptional gift. In addition, because they can grow without soil, they symbolize freedom and make a perfect gift for someone who enjoys traveling.

With air plants, there is no limitation to the way you can decorate since they don’t require any specific medium.

Despite their size and fuzzy texture, they are relatively fragile. The roots of their plants are purely for clinging. Soil and water will not support their growth. As air plants absorb their nutrients through leaves, they will need a humid environment in order to grow.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Within the house, the air can get pretty dry, providing little to no humidity. Hence, this plant needs to be soaked in lukewarm water every two weeks for around 10 to 20 minutes. Your best option is to use rainwater instead of tap water. It will then need about 3 hours to air dry. You should soak them in water once a month with mild fertilizer to feed them. We wouldn’t want to burn the plants by overfeeding them with fertilizer.

Snake Plant

As a traditional Chinese household plant, it grants its virtues to those who possess it since the eight gods bestow their blessings on the possessor. Structure-wise, snake plants (mom-in-law’s tongue) are hardy and quite hard to kill.

If you enjoy keeping plants but spend most of your time away from home, it’s a great option for you. Furthermore, it also acts as an air purifier that will clean the air and absorb harmful toxins like carbon monoxide and benzene. Because snake plants produce oxygen at night, they are best placed in bedrooms.

Whenever I can’t decide which plants to give and to whom, I’ll choose this plant as a gift.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Keep Snake plant away from direct sunlight, water the plant only until the top inch of soil feels dry using a knuckle test. You should avoid watering the leaves since it can encourage root rot when they are wet. Last but not least, fertilizer should only be applied during the growing season.

Hoya Plant

Plants such as hoya are popular with those who enjoy creeping plants. The vines love being able to attach themselves to anything they can reach. You’ll be inspired by the Hoyas. With Hoyas, the decorating possibilities are endless!

Growing hoyas in hanging pots will create a beautiful display. They will also look great climbing up walls or making trails on bookcases. Hoyas are the perfect plants for anyone who wants to give their home a natural, wild, outdoorsy vibe, without the need to bring the entire tropical forest inside.

I love giving this plant to anyone who tends to change their home’s interiors frequently.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Hoya plants are relatively simple to care for. All you need to do is make sure it’s grown in a soil that’s organically rich and drains well. As long as you keep it in the same pot since they do well, they will thrive, as they love root-bound environments as well. Ensure that the soil is moist and that it is placed in an area with ample sunlight.

Oyster Plant

With its simple yet bold appearance, the Oyster plant is quite popular. It is because of their unique foliages that are laced with variegation that this is possible. In addition, it is stroked in tricolors (white, pink, purple, and green) on the leaf top while being fully purple on the bottom. This plant should be given to someone with a simple personality but with bold personality.

The use of this plant as a centerpiece always creates a lot of conversation. My typical gift would be to give this plant to someone looking for “something” to complete their decor.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Oyster plants do well in well-drained and nutrient-rich soil. Since it’s drought-tolerant, make sure you water the plant at least once a week and avoid overwatering as it promotes root rot. The plant needs bright light, but it should be kept out of direct sunlight because direct sunlight can cause problems.

Heartleaf Philodendron

The Heartleaf Philodendron is the kind of plant dedicated to enthusiasts who love to bring the outdoors inside.

The reason is that this plant loves to creep on surfaces, and if left uncontrolled, it will eventually take over your living space.

As a result of their plant structure, you can have this plant in a cascading form in a pot or a compact form when pruned or let it creep on anything with a path. If you want to create a striking appeal in your living space, the evergreen leaves are heart-shaped and glossy, no matter what form you choose.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: This plant thrives well in bright spots that use indirect sunlight. You should be careful when selecting a location for this plant because direct sunlight can harm its leaves. It is essential that the soil contain nutrients and have good drainage. Ensure the plant is watered regularly but not overwatered. Having said that, ensure that the ground is dry before you water. Knuckle tests can be used to confirm this.

Flamingo Flower (Anthurium)

There is no one who should not enjoy Flamingo Flower. The boldness and beauty of this sculpture attract attention wherever it is displayed. This plant is so beautiful because of its bright colors! You can choose from red, pink, or white. Once it blooms, the plant will last a while, but it will require more attention than many. Your centerpiece will not be disappointed when you use Anthuriums. It is not uncommon for me to spend most of my day just admiring this plant’s beauty.

Giving a red Flaming Flower encourages love and peace, a pink one shows love and compassion, and a white one represents purity and innocence.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS: Anthuriums need plenty of bright indirect sunlight. It is necessary to water them often since they love a medium to high level of humidity. As this plant blossoms often, pruning them is necessary, especially when it comes to cutting up old leaves. They will be able to bloom again and again.

To sum it up…

There is no easy way to find the perfect gift that will not only surprise the recipient, but also excite and stay with them for a long time. Plants are the only exception! Plants are an ideal gift for others, but they are often overlooked.

In the future, if you want to give a gift with more meaning, or just want to have someone remember you often, think about giving a plant instead. The houseplant may seem strange at first, but they’ll slowly come to appreciate it. Additionally, they’ll never forget you for introducing them to this fascinating world!
