A hedge trimmer is a tool used to cut and trim shrubs, hedges, trees, bushes, and other similar plants. A hedge trimmer works on gas or electric power source. Some of the popular models are the cordless trimmers that require batteries to run. The rechargeable battery allows you to move from one place to another without using up energy. Hedge trimmers have two types: rotating blade & fixed-blade. There are different styles available in the market for cutting different kinds of vegetation.

Hedge trimmers are one of those tools that are very handy. They come in various sizes and shapes but, their main purpose remains the same; to cut and shape the vegetation around your house.

Without trimming and pruning hedgerows, shrubs and bushes on a regular basis they will grow rapidly and leave your garden a mess. Leave it long enough and the inexorable creep of your hedges will shrink your garden, leaving you less green space to enjoy, and potentially cause unpleasant spats with neighbours unhappy about your cypresses intruding upon their property. As such a hedgetrimmer is just as essential as a lawnmower for any home owner with shrubs and hedgerows in their garden.”

Can Hedge Trimmer Cut Branches

So, can hedge trimmer cut branches? Yes it is! Trees and hedgerows exist in a variety of sizes and densities, from oak to dogwood branches and everything in between. The majority of hedge trimmers include teeth that are 3/4 inch apart, making them ideal for cutting thin, lightweight brush, twigs, and branches.

History of Hedge Trimmer

In ancient times, people used scissors to cut grasses while grazing cattle. In 1885, Fredrick Dickson invented the first machine for cutting grass which was called “the lawn mower”. It had an engine that ran by petrol. One year later, William Sellers developed the first gasoline powered lawnmower. He also made the first electric motorized lawnmower in 1921 which he named as “the electric lawn mower” and sold the idea to Sears.

In 1945, James Whitemore created the first electrically operated garden tractor. In 1956, the first electric chain saw was invented and the name was “electric weed eater”. In 1960, a new type of grass trimmer was invented and the name became a hedge trimmer. In 1964, John Deere Company introduced its first electric lawn tractors to the public.

How Does Hedge Trimming Work?

There are many different types of hedge trimmers available in the market for both professional and amateur users. Each style comes with unique features and function. Here is an overview of each kind.

  • Rotating Blade – This type of hedge trimmer uses sharp blades attached to a shaft which rotate at high speed. The rotation makes the blades cut through plant material. Rotary blades help in maintaining cleanliness as well as giving you faster results. However, these blades can easily break thus increasing the chances of losing money.
  • Fixed Blades – This type of hedge cutting device consists of blades that remain stationary during usage. These blades are usually curved and are connected to the handle of the device. As opposed to rotary blades, fixed blades don’t spin. Instead, they make circular cuts. On the contrary, rotary blades have flexible blades that allow them to cut any irregular surface.

Electric vs Gas Powered Hedge Trimmers

Electric hedge trimmers are much safer than gas hedge trimmers. If you have children, then you should definitely opt for an electric model. Also, if you have pets around the area where you will be operating the hedge trimmer, this would be a great option for you.

If you want to use the electric hedge trimmers under water, go ahead and do it since they are completely safe. Also, if you are looking for extra security, electric hedge trimmers provide you with a safety switch.

Gas hedge trimmers are not as safe as electric ones. Since they are heavier, there is a higher chance of getting injured when using them. Plus, you cannot operate these trimmers safely under water.

Hedge Trimming Tools & Accessories

You need to buy certain tools and accessories to work on your hedge. Below are some of the most common tools you may require for trimming your hedges:

  • Hand Shears or Pruning Hooks – A hand shear is commonly known as pruning hooks. They are specifically designed for removing small amounts of wood from plants. You can use regular shears but they aren’t as effective.
  • Pruning Knife – When you trim bushes and shrubs, you’ll need a pair of pruning knives. Look for a knife that has a long blade. This way you can get rid of dead branches without harming others. Make sure you sharpen the edge of the blade regularly.
  • Garden Hose – Sometimes you need something to wash the dust out of your hands after working outdoors. Garden hoses are perfect for cleaning up. They are easy to store and use. You can even connect hose to your washing machine!
  • Rake – Rakes are essential for clearing leaves off the ground before starting to trim.
  • Trowel – Use a trowel to dig deep into the soil surrounding the base of shrubs and trees.
