Overwatering is the number two killer of houseplants if you know anything about them. Plants dislike having their roots submerged in a pool of water. It doesn’t feel good. It rots and may drown the plant.

With that stated, I believe I can confidently answer the question, “Do houseplants need pots with holes?” Yes. To make it as simple as possible for you to maintain your plant alive, place it in a container with drainage holes at the bottom.

Why It Should Have Holes?

Drainage holes help in the fight against overwatering

A pot without a drain hole means that there is no place for the water to go, so it stays at the bottom of the container. This is bad because it could cause root rot. A clay pot should have a drain hole. Clay pots hold moisture better than other types of containers.

Yuccas need water to grow. You should plant them in pots with holes in the bottom. If you put your yucca in a container without holes, it won’t get enough water. Your yucca might start to wilt.

Drainage holes make it easier to water plants thoroughly

Plants need to be watered thoroughly and then left to dry. Some plants like to be soaked and then dried out. Others prefer to be drenched and then left alone.

Plants need to be watered regularly or they’ll dry out. Drainage holes are important for plants. Cacti and succulants need less water than other types of plants.

Cacti and succulent plants require lots of water and sunlight. Drying them gently with a hairdryers helps them flourish.

It can help us see when it’s time to repot

Plants that grow in pots should be kept well watered and fertilized. When the roots get too large for the pot, the plant may become rootbound. Some plants do not mind being rootbound. Spider plants are happy being rootbound. Asparagus ferns are also happy being rootbound. Peace lilies, aloe Vera, and sansevierias are also happy being root bound.

Cacti are tall thin plants that grow a root system to help them stay up. They prefer to be planted in pots, but if they’re too tall or skinny, they’ll get tangled up in the ground. You should try to loosen the roots by turning the plant sideways and gently easing them out of the pot. If you can’t see any roots, then it’s time for a new pot.

A plant without a drainage hole should be checked first. Sometimes plants get stuck in the ground because of this. If the plant is rootbound, it may push its roots through the surface. This could cause problems if the plant gets loose and starts growing into other things.

Holes allow airflow

Most plants need light, loose soil. Heavy, compacted soil can crush the roots of plants. A drainage hole in the bottom allows water to drain out. To help plants grow better, you should water them once a week. Don’t be too aggressive – we’re trying to fresen up the soil here, and not disembowel your plants’ roots.

Drainage holes can prevent the buildup of salts in the soil

Fertilizing your plants is very important because it helps them grow faster and more healthily. But if you’re new to gardening, you shouldn’t fertilize your plants right away. Wait until your plants have been around for about a year before you start fertilizing them.

Fertilizers should be added to the soil, not the water. You shouldn’t put fertilizers near the roots of your plants because it could burn them.

Drainage holes in pots mean that excess fertilizer can seeping through the bottom of the pots and be washed away by clean water. It’s important to not let your plant sit in a saucer that’s already been through soil – it can pick up salts and other nasty things as it goes through that you don’t need being sucked back up by the plants.
