ECHO 58V Lawn Mower CLM-58V4AH Review: 4 Important Things To Know!

Echo’s brushless power plant is superb, and we’re thrilled with its cutting power.

Upgrading to a 6.0Ah battery or adding a second 4.0Ah battery would increase the amount…

…of area you can cut while charging. While I’m developing a wish list, switching to a steel deck…

…completely changes the sensation of using this mower. If ECHO 58V Lawn Mower intends to stay…

…on the expensive side of the market, those two enhancements alone will propel it higher in the rankings.

Performance of ECHO 58V Lawn Mower

  • Cutting Power:

When we tested blade tip speeds on the ECHO 58V Lawn Mower, we saw some tremendous power.

The Echo produced a middle-of-the-pack 2776 RPM under no load, but a class-leading 173.3 MPH blade tip speed.

That’s the advantage of employing a 21-inch blade while the majority of your competitors…

…are using 18- or 19-inch blades. After that, we connected all of the mowers…

…to a lesser load to imitate the stress placed on a motor during a weekly maintenance cut.

A brushless motor will typically detect additional resistance on the blade and increase the output to compensate.

It’s an electronic advantage that even some brushed motors take advantage of.

The Echo cordless mower was no exception. The RPMs increased to 2832 under maintenance load…

…and the blade tip speed increased to 176.8 MPH. Even so, it was still a lot taller than any other push mower.

With a speed of 167.8 MPH, Stihl came the closest.

When we mounted a large load to the mower blades, the performance improved even more.

It reached 3005 RPM and a blade tip speed of 187.6 MPH, finishing barely behind Stihl’s 191.7 MPH.

To properly cut, we like blade speeds of at least 160 MPH.

Echo is one of the most capable battery-powered lawn mowers throughout a wide range…

…of cutting circumstances, as seen by its ability to start above that mark and rise as the load increases.

  • Cutting Area:

With battery-powered mowers, manufacturers must strike a balance between power and runtime. Today’s batteries…

…and brushless motors can compete with some gas engines, but it doesn’t matter if it only operates for 3 minutes.

It all boils down to productivity. To be honest, Echo’s battery isn’t particularly efficient.

It has a 58V 4.0Ah battery, which implies it has a capacity of 204 watt hours.

The maintenance load runtime is 33 minutes, which is 7 minutes shorter than we prefer in a kit.

This equates to 62 square feet per watt hour, which is the lowest in its category.

However, the larger blade compensates for some of this. On a single charge, you may mow up…

…to 12,705 square feet – slightly under a third of an acre – by walking at a constant speed of 2.5 MPH.

While this isn’t bad for a single battery, several of Echo’s primary competitors include a second in their kits and go on.

If you’re willing to spend the money on a second battery, it’s a moot point. If you have a couple of batteries…

…the mower also comes with an inactive spare battery storage bay, so you can swap them out fast.

Noise of ECHO 58V Lawn Mower

In terms of noise, the ECHO 58V Lawn Mower sits in the middle of the pack. We measured it at 82 dB(A) at the ear under no load. We’ll take that, especially since the range for cordless mowers was between 74dB(A) and 88dB(A).

keep going…

Feature Set of ECHO 58V Lawn Mower

Although we’d all like to have a self-propelled drive, push mowers have a place in the OPE vernacular as well. The ECHO 58V Lawn Mower isn’t self-propelled, but it’s light enough at 57 lbs that it’s not too difficult to maneuver around the yard.

  • Plastic Composite Deck: Echo’s usage of a plastic composite deck is the key reason for its modest weight. Other manufactures use plastic poly instead of steel, and it’s essentially a matter of weight vs. durability. However, the deck thickness on this model appears to be a little thinner than on some of the other versions, which makes us worry how well it will hold up over time. It should be fine as long as you’re not throwing pebbles around. The deck is also covered by a lifetime warranty from Echo. This approach, on the other hand, has more flexibility than the majority of the others.
  • Height Adjustment and Range: The only model in the push mower testing that has a 4-point height adjustment for the deck is the Echo cordless mower. The single-point height adjustment is preferred by everyone else. There are a few things to be concerned about here. The detents are not reinforced by a metal plate, and the levers are made of plastic. This, along with the thickness and/or material of the deck, is a relatively easy target for Echo to modify in their future mower. The silver lining is that it offers the most cutting heights of any cordless tool in its class. Its seven different height levels vary from 0.75′′ to 4′′.
  • Handle Positions: On the Echo cordless mower, there are three handle locations to choose from. So, whether you’re short, tall, or anywhere in between, you should be able to find a comfortable handle position.
  • Discharge Options: You can mulch or bag cuttings right out of the box, which should suffice for the most of us. You’ll need to purchase a separate attachment if you prefer side discharge.
  • Vertical Storage: The flexibility of a cordless mower to stand and store vertically is one of our favorites. Echo joins a select club of mowers that can do so, allowing it to take up less space in your garage.

Value

The price vs. build quality is the key concern for me when it comes to the ECHO 58V Lawn Mower’s value.

The cutting power is sufficient, and the cutting area meets my minimum requirements.

However, the package with just one battery for this mostly plastic composite mower costs $519…

…(we’ve seen it for a bit less at Acme Tools). It’s the second most costly mower in our category (with two…

…sets of batteries), but it feels like you could throw the Makita through a brick wall and it’d still work well.

And finally…

Sum Up

The ECHO 58V Lawn Mower isn’t a horrible tool; it’s simply that the cordless world has advanced much…

…in the last four years. Echo’s brushless power plant is superb, and we’re thrilled with its cutting power.

You could boost the amount of area you can cut on a charge by upgrading to a 6.0Ah battery or adding…

…a second 4.0Ah to the kit. If you like what you see, it has the capability to manage maintenance cuts for up…

…to a week’s worth of overgrowth. Stick to 1/3-acre lots or invest in an extra battery to increase your runtime.

Conclusion

While I’m developing a wish list, switching to a steel deck completely changes the sensation…

…of using this ECHO 58V Lawn Mower. If ECHO 58V Lawn Mower intends to stay on…

…the expensive side of the market, those two enhancements alone will propel it higher in the rankings.

And you can complete your garden tools with garden hoegarden trowel and garden bags.
