Snake plants are among the strongest plants. Their ability to live indoors and outdoors is the reason for their success. Even if you forget to water them for several days, they will still look good. When it comes to snake plant, it has some methods of propagation. Is it possible to propagate it from new shoots? Is it possible to do that?
Propagating by Rhizome
Rhizomes are used to propagate or grow snake plants. Rhizomes are what are they? It is a stem that grows underground and horizontally. As snake plants grow, they produce new shoots, which are called pups. If we do not have pups to grow into new plants, what will we do? The rhizome can be used to grow new snake plants if this is the case.
Several things are needed to propagate snake plants from rhizome, including:
- Shears or a knife that is sharp
- Newspaper or outdoor space
- Planting mixture or succulent soil
- There are now pots for each rhizome
The first step is laying the snake plant carefully on its side. After that, remove it from the pot by sliding it. Under the soil, you will find some rhizomes in the root area. How do the rhizomes look? They are white stems that look like garlic cloves.
Using a sharp knife, you can cut the rhizomes from the base of the plant once you have found them. Ensure that the knife is clean. You must be careful not to damage the roots when doing this.
After that, you have to let the rhizome callous over for several days, just as you do with soil cuttings. When a callus forms, you can plant the rhizome in a new pot if you find that a callous has formed. Then, you must wait for the new growth to appear.
Propagating in Water
The easiest way to propagate a snake plant is in water. Using a sharp knife or scissors, you need to cut off the leaf you want to propagate near the soil. You should dip your cutting into root hormone. It’s fine if you don’t want to. Once the covering is about 25% of the leaf with water, you need to submerge the lower portion of the leaf in water. Keep in mind that the leaf of a snake plant must be oriented in the same direction as when it was in soil. Snake plant leaves are very polar, so the roots can only grow if the edge of the leaf that is closest to the soil is placed in water. After that, the container can be placed in an indirect light area and the water can be changed each couple of days. Within a few minutes, you will see small roots and can then plant them in sand.
Propagating in Soil
Is it possible to propagate snake plant cuttings from soil? If you want to propagate a leaf, you can start with it. Use a knife to cut it close to the soil. Let the pieces of the leaf sit out for several days until they start to callous over to prevent bacteria from the soil from getting into the leaf and rotting it. It is important to remember which part of the leaf goes up and which part goes down. Then, you should pour the soil which is well-draining over the part of the plant closest to the bottom.
Propagating by Division
In order to propagate snake plants by division, you must separate a single plant into two or more plants. Afterwards, slide the plant out of its pot by laying it on its side. Make sure you inspect the roots and find the rhizomes carefully. After that, cut the plant so that each section has at least three rhizomes and one healthy leaf. There must also be a few roots in each section. If you split the snake plant, you can repot each separate plant into a fresh pot with succulent soil. When the soil has dried out, water each of them again with a small amount of water.
How to Grow Snake Plants Shoots
Once you have propagated the snake plants above and they have sprouted new shoots, you have to repot them. If you take the snake plant out of its pot and brush away some soil, you can see where the new shoots or pups are connected to their mother. The soil level is located in the white part of the pup.
To have a strong start out in the world, you need to make a cut below a root so the pup or shoot has some roots of its own. In order to pot the pups or shoots, you must use fresh soil. The soil can be packed up to the point where the white section of the stem turns green.
Snake Plants Care
