Sansevieria Zeylanica Care Guide

The perennial succulent Sansevieria Zeylanica comes from the genus Dracaena. Sansevieria Indica, Snake Plant, or Bowstring Hemp are all common names for this evergreen plant. Sansevieria Zeylanica is often found in dry, rocky areas and is tough and rugged looking.

Native to the tropical regions of West Africa and Southeast Asia, Bowstring Hemp is grown in large plantations. This plant has long, pointed leaves. It is hardy and tough and often has rough, brown edges.

A beautiful olive-green color, with pale green stripes, covers the sword-like leaves of the Sansevieria Zeylanica. Waves run with the leaves of the plant in these stripes.

Soil

The Bowstring Hemp does not tolerate soggy soils. It needs a well-draining soil like most of its kind.

Getting good drainage is the key to growing Sansevieria Zeylanica in a variety of pot soils.

The best soil mix for your snake plant is a granulated, coarse mix. It is best to use a potting mix with a sandy loam.

Light

Different from other succulents, this one can survive low light. Sansevieria Zeylanica can be happy in varying levels of light. From partial shade to full sun, this plant can handle it all.

Bowstring Hemp needs moderate amounts of bright light to grow properly. Tolerance to these levels of light does not mean you will grow better in them.

The leaves of Sansevieria Zeylanica will be duller if they are kept in very low light. The edges of your plant’s leaves are likely to turn yellow when exposed to intense or full direct sunlight.

To grow your Bowstring Hemp plants successfully, you should place them in indirect, bright or filtered light. The leaves of your plant will appear brighter and more vibrant in their preferred location.

Watering

Generally, less than one inch of water is necessary to maintain a healthy plant. Infrequent watering is best, usually once every two weeks will do the trick.

It is best to water Bowstring Hemp sparingly during the colder winter months. During the growing period, it is important for your Sansevieria Zeylanica to be provided with a healthy amount of water. For plants like this, the growing season occurs during spring and summer.

When the soil surrounding the plant is completely dry, it should be watered.  It is recommended to water your Bowstring Hemp only once a year. Succulents store water in their leaves, so they must never have soggy soil.

Watering your Sansevieria Zeylanica too much is a sure way for it to suffer from root rot. Check if your plant’s soil is dry before watering. Since water will eventually make the Bowstring Hemp rot, it prefers to not be watered for an additional day or two.

Temperature

In warmer temperatures, Sansevieria Zeylanica, being native to drier regions, can thrive. The average room temperature is good. Ideal temperatures are between 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C) to keep your Bowstring Hemp happy.

A plant of this genus is unable to withstand extreme temperature. Leaves will be damaged if your Sansevieria Zeylanica is left in temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

It is best to keep your Bowstring Hemp clear of drafts if you want it to be protected.

Humidity

This plant thrives best in semiarid and humid environments. You do not need additional humidity for your indoor Sansevieria Zeylanica.

For tropical jungle plants, things like pebble trays and humidifiers that increase humidity are reserved.

 Fertilizer

Sansevieria Zeylanica has minimal feeding habits. You don’t need supplemental feeding for them and you don’t need to give them much care. When your plants receive too much fertilizer, their leaves will begin to fall over.

The best way to fertilize your Bowstring Hemp is once a month at most. A general-purpose houseplant or cactus feed should be used during the growing season.

Propagation

The process of propagating your Sansevieria Zeylanica is simple. Choose from several viable ways to go about it. A plant’s rhizomes can be used to propagate. Leaf cuttings or divisions are also easy ways to propagate.

Growth

Bowstring Hemp grows from mid-summer to mid-spring and is evergreen. The plant reaches a height between 1.5ft and 3.3ft (45cm to 1m).

This plant is a blooming plant called Sansevieria Zeylanica. Even though it is very rare, the Bowstring Hemp will blossom between the months of winter and spring. The plant’s flower stalks can grow up to 61cm (2ft) tall.

Even though Sansevieria Zeylanica is slow growing, it is extremely easy to grow. It is known to grow well despite the fact that their care is minimal. You won’t even need to prune this easy-going plant regularly. It only requires pruning when damaged or dead leaves appear.

Featuring horizontal zebra stripes on its leaves, Bowstring Hemp stands out among the rest. A very minor leaf cracking problem commonly occur in this plant, stemless and without a stem. Sansevieria Zeylanica leaves are about 2.5cm (1in) wide and grow from a rhizomatous rootstock.

When you are lucky enough to get to witness the blossoming of your Bowstring Hemp, you are in for a treat. A tubular flower with delicate petals grows in clusters along the stem. These flowers have a light fragrance.

Colors of pale green or greenish-white can be seen in the flowers, which blossom to a size of 1in to 1.5in (2.5cm to 3.8cm).

Potting

Indoor and outdoor environments are both suitable for growing Sansevieria Zeylanica plants.

It is best to use a lightweight commercial potting mix to keep your plants comfortable. In both the pot and the soil, good drainage is essential.

It is ideal that you use a clay pot for your Bowstring Hemp plant. Otherwise, its roots may crack the pot if it feels cramped or over-crowded.

In addition to yellowing or even loss of leaves, Sansevieria Zeylanica needs a pot transplant due to congestion.

Bowstring Hemp does not require repotting all that often. The plant performs better in a larger, more confined pot. It prefers a slightly root-bound pot. A slightly crowded root system increases the chances of your plant producing blossoms.

Sansevieria Zeylanica Propagation

You have a few options to choose from when propagating your Bowstring Hemp. The seeds are not recommended for growing plants, even if they are possible.

This plant blooms only rarely, so not only is it difficult to get seeds, but this method is not always successful.

Propagating Sansevieria Zeylanica from leaf cuttings is the easiest way. Aside from being a quick and simple process, it gives you the chance to grow more than one additional plant.

Leaf cuttings must be mature and healthy if you want to propagate your plant.

A leaf cutting of about 2ft to 3ft in length (5cm to 7.5cm) is best. These Bowstring Hemp cuttings take one to two days to dry.

A leaf cut end should then be placed in water and a rooting hormone is applied to it before it is planted in the ground.

A potting mix of 1 part peat and 2 parts sand that is damp is suitable for planting the leaf cuttings. Bowstring Hemp cuttings should be planted in a location with bright, indirect sunlight. Cactus potting mix is also not a bad choice.

Water your Sansevieria Zeylanica cuttings only when the soil is nearly dry.

The only way to propagate a plant is to separate it into clumps. Because of this, it is recommended that an adult plant be used.

This root ball can be divided into at least two segments, each able to be planted separately in a pot.

Common problems with Sansevieria Zeylanica

Except for the blooming concern, Bowstring Hemp is fairly straightforward to grow. As long as you keep your plant out of direct sunlight and don’t overwater it, you should not have a problem growing this plant.

This is a hardy and forgiving plant that does not suffer from many pests. Occasionally your Sansevieria Zeylanica may have some uninvited guests, but they are easily dealt with.

Root rot is caused by overwatering. Sansevieria Zeylanica will contract and rot quickly if the soil is too wet. Poor drainage can also cause the issue.

Tips to keep Sansevieria Zeylanic problem-free

You should never leave your Bowstring Hemp in temperatures lower than 50°F (10°C). This will affect the leaves of your plant.

If you leave your Sansevieria Zeylanica in direct sunlight, it may yellow its leaves.

Minor pests may occur if your Sansevieria Zeylanica plant is allowed to collect dust. Keeping your plant dust-free will, in turn, keep it pest-free.

Wipe your plant’s leaves with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Steer clear of leaveshine products that could damage your Bowstring Hemp plants.

The most important tip to keep your Sansevieria Zeylanica healthy and beautiful is to water it sparingly. You should only water your plant once the soil is completely dry.
