Why My Lawn Mower Is Sputtering?

When your lawn mower is sputtering, it is most likely due to a gas problem. The gas gets into the carburetor and causes the engine to sputter. Carburetor problems are usually caused by dirt and debris in the gas lines. If your lawn mower has not been used for a while, it is possible that the filter may have become clogged with dirt and debris. This can cause the fuel to leak out of the carburetor and make it difficult for the engine to start. Here’s how to fix it

Step 1

Remove the gas tank’s cap and inspect the gas within. Examine the gas for evidence of moisture. Water causes the mower to splutter. Empty the machine of old gas by tipping it over and collecting the gas in a plastic container. Change the gas.

Step 2

Invert the mower so that the oil case is positioned underneath the carburetor. A drain pan should be placed underneath the oil plug. Remove the oil cap with a wrench and drain the machine of all oil. Replenish the crankcase with the oil indicated in the owner’s handbook.

Step 3

Remove the screw that secures the air filter cover. Remove the air filter and check it for dirt accumulation. If a paper filter becomes clogged, replace it. Use a drop of liquid dish soap and warm water to clean a foam filter. Squeeze the foam filter dry and set it aside to thoroughly dry.

Step 4

Examine the unit’s underbelly for caked-on grass. Excess grass under the deck causes the mower to splutter. With a wrench, remove the spark plug to prevent the mower from starting while you work below. Scrape away the grass using a paint scraper.

There are different types of lawn mowers like petrol lawn mower, tractor lawn mower, walk behind lawn mower, stand on push start lawn mower etc. There are numerous benefits associated with each type of lawn mowers. Let us discuss about these models one by one.

  • Petrol mower: This model is easy to control especially if you have no experience of operating the mower. You just need to operate the engine and then turn off the ignition key. In case you forget to switch off the engine, there may be chances of fire. Petrol mower has a gas tank which stores fuel. When you run the mower, it will automatically ignite the fuel. Once the engine runs idle, the fuel tank gets empty and turns itself off automatically. This kind of mower is most commonly used because of its ease of use.
  • Tractor mower :This is probably the most common model of all the lawn mowers. It is mainly used for commercial purposes. The main advantage of this model is that you can cut the grass without any difficulty. The mowing height of the blades is adjustable; hence, the operator can choose the exact length of the grass to be cut. Tractor mowers come with a powerful motor which cuts down the grass very quickly. They are more expensive than other models and have a better quality blade.
  • Walk behind lawn mower : This is another widely used model of all the lawnmowers. While it is not suitable for larger areas, it suits small residential properties very well. You do not require much space while working around your property. The mower is pushed from behind and comes to rest when it reaches the end of the yard. It requires less maintenance and repair compared to other models.
  • Push start lawn mower: Push start lawn mowers are battery powered. They require less time to charge up fully. These mowers are generally more comfortable to work with as they provide good traction and cushioning. These mowers are also safer due to their weight distribution system and balance. Push start mowers are ideal for smaller yards.
