Windowless Bathrooms – 9 Upright Plants

1 – Lucky Bamboo

A common plant that is easy to grow and is readily available at garden centers, grocery stores, dollar stores, convenience stores, car washes and gas stations. It is easy to maintain and requires little light.

Dracaena sanderiana does not require potting mix to thrive. Simply buy a few shoots, pack them home and add filtered water and pebbles, or water that has been sitting out overnight, allowing chemicals to dissipate. The water should be changed weekly to prevent the growth of mold.

Plants of this kind grow rapidly, but you can keep them in shape by trimming them regularly or by putting them in an area that alters their growth. For example, a shelf might be above it.

2 – Ferns

In low-light bathrooms, ferns like Bird’s nest fern (Asplenium), Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), and Staghorn fern really thrive.

An interesting plant is the asparagus foxtail fern. This plant does not grow true fern but its appearance is interesting. It likes natural light but a bathroom window will also work.

Shower plants are perfect for showers because they love humidity from the showers, but they also require regular watering or misting. Check the soil for moisture level and keep it damp (not soggy) on a regular basis.

3 – Cast Iron Plant

Plants that are known for being plant killers, like Aspidistra elatior, are good for you. This plant is best when placed in a low light setting and tolerates a neglected watering schedule such as those who forget to water. It is tolerant of extremes of temperature (50°-85° degrees Fahrenheit). It is natural to appreciate a consistent temperature in all living things.

When caring for aspidistra, consider placing it in an area where it receives indirect sunlight and watering it thoroughly after the soil has become completely dried out.

To keep the long, spear-like leaves clean, wipe them with a damp cloth from time to time. If your bathroom is windowless, provide artificial lighting.

There are dwarf Aspidistra plants, which grow up to 18 inches high, as well as full-size plants (3-5 feet high). Its leaves are either dark green or yellow striped.

4 – Chinese Evergreen

Aglaonema is a large, leafy plant in flower with pink or white markings on the leaves. A lot of people keep this plant in the bathroom, since it is so beautiful and hardy and thrives in a controlled environment. It is ideal for a bathroom because it can be placed in a controlled environment.

5 – Dieffenbachia

Dumb Cane is a much bigger plant, resembling Chinese evergreens and Aspidistra, with leaves up to a foot long.

The lighting needs of Dieffenbachia are high humidity and well-drained soil. It likes high humidity and bright indirect light, but needs protection from direct sunlight.

You need this tropical plant if you want to create a well-lit atmosphere in a large, windowless bathroom.

6 – Dracaena

The large, spear-shaped leaves of the “dragon plant” range in size from very fine and thin to several inches in width.

They are available in solid green, maroon-green and variegated colorations. The thick, trunk-like stems sprout leaves that are light in color.

A real workhorse as air purifying plants for bathrooms, this plant prefers artificial light over natural light and scorches in bright sunlight.

You could easily grow this plant in a bathroom with just the high humidity levels you would expect to find.

Dracaena Janet Crag ‘Compacta’ is an example of a plant that doesn’t require heavy light to grow well.

7 – Philodendron

A “philo” comes in many shapes and sizes, with glossy green, variegated, or maroon colored leaves, as well as medium-light, low-care tropical plants.

Split leaf varieties, such as Monstera. Heartleaf philodendrons, are long-time, popular favorites due to their heart-shaped leaves.

Any type of philodendron requires a consistent, moderate amount of light, so artificial lighting is the ideal choice. In addition, they need a consistently warm, humid environment, so plan to keep your bathroom between 75° and 85° degrees Fahrenheit.

8 – Mother-In-Law Tongue | Snake Plant

Sansevieria (also called Snake Plant or Viper’s Bowstring Hemp) is a well-known standby. A tough customer, the snake plant is large, upright, rigid spears of dark green with dark green strips and white or yellow edges. The snake plant is a NASA star when it comes to air purifiers, and it tolerates all manner of abuse.

Light levels ranging from low indirect lighting to bright indirect lighting are best for snake plants. The Birds Nest Snake Plant will also grow well with fluorescent or grow lights. It can be grown in most humidity levels and needs little watering. A favorite plant for bathroom settings.

9 – ZZ Plant

Known occasionally as the ZEEZEE plant or Zamioculcas zamiifolia, Zamioculcas zamiifolia can survive in a range of conditions. If you can provide any indirect light or artificial light to the zz plant, it will be happy. However, direct sunlight or very deep shade will not be good for it.

If ZZ plants are drought tolerant, they will do best if they are watered when the top inch of the soil turns dry. If you tend to forget and they begin to drop their leaves, just water them again and they will bounce back.

It is an attractive plant that can reach a maximum height of 2 feet. It has strong thick, glossy leaves on long fronds.

10 – Peperomia Plant aka The Radiator

Since the beginning of time, the Peperomia plant with about one-hundred varieties has become popular as a houseplant. However, out of all those species only a handful are cultivated for commercial purposes.

Peperomia obtusifolia (baby rubber plant) is one of the most popular species with a variety of cultivars and sports. Also known as the baby rubber plant, peperomia make a nice addition to the bathroom.

You can easily care for Peperomia plants since they appreciate humidity, tolerate a lower light level, and don’t like over-watering. You’ll find numerous varieties perfect for your bathroom.

Most of these upright, low-light plants are practically indestructible, with the exception of ferns which are delicate, so your most carefree plant choice may be a fern.

11 – Calathea Burle Marxii

Calathea plants possess long, broad, pointed leaves with a variety of contrasting colors. Their centerpieces make wonderful decor and even their undersides are stunning.

Calathea (Stromanthe amabilis) Burle Marxii is an excellent variety for bathroom culture. A small grower, it thrives in small containers.
