So, how are plant pot sizes measured? Here are the breakdown for it:

  • In the United States, pots are often measured in inches, gallons, or liters and centimeters. A quart is a gallon, but an inch is the diameter of the pot. Every 1 to 2 inches, or one gallon, additional pot size is added.
  • An average 7-8-inch pot diameter at the rim of a one-gallon container, however this can vary widely based on the container’s design and shape.
  • A 12″ plant, for example, indicates that it requires a pot with a 12″ diameter, or a pot of around 4 to 5 gallons. This is the dimension of the actual pot.

What Guidelines Should I Follow In Order To Choose The Proper Pot Size?

A good rule of thumb is to use a pot that is twice as wide and deep as the root ball of your plant. This is the root system that lies underneath the surface. Using a pot one-third the diameter of the canopy spread is another option.

You should always seek out the guidance of a local garden store or nursery when it comes to certain plant kinds. Generally speaking, the most common pot sizes are for tiny plants, however this may vary according on the pot maker

What Size Pot Do I Need For Popular Plants?

This section breaks down each pot into inches, gallons, how much soil is needed, and what type of plant you need.

Planter Sizes for Citrus Trees

Citrus trees need a lot of water, but they also need plenty of air circulation. So make sure you give them enough space to breathe. Make sure your pot has lots of drainage holes. And if you’re growing citrus trees in containers, make sure they get enough light.

Large trees need deep pots to grow roots. Make sure your pots are big enough for the tree to grow into them. Trees should be planted after the soil has been prepared and the ground has had time to settle.

Planter Sizes for Flowers and Herbs

Herbs need well-drained soil. Choose a pot that’s at least 6 inches deep. Herbs grow better if you give them more light.

Planter Sizes for Cacti Succulents

Container should be about the same width and height as your cactus with extra space around the edges. Succulent plants need to be watered regularly and placed in bright light.

Planter Sizes for Vegetables

Most vegetables should be planted in deep pots. Deep pots give plants more room to grow roots. Deep pots also allow for more space to grow above-ground crops.

Planter Sizes for House plants

Indoor plants should be kept in pots or trays. Smaller pots are easier to move around. Larger pots are better for floor standing planters.

Planter Sizes Plants from seedlings

Vegetable seedlings should be planted into smaller pots first before being put into the ground. These plants will need to be moved into bigger pots as they grow.

Planter Sizes for Shrubs

Shrubs should be planted in pots with a depth of around 1/3rd of the height of the shrub. A pot with a diameter of 2x the height of the shrubs is ideal.
